Contextual Fit:

Analysis and Design of Adding on

Narrative: Emily and Josh are the owners of the Smith House by Richard Meier on the Connecticut shoreline.  Both Josh and Emily make it part of their daily routine to go to the gym. Going to the gym together is one thing they love to do. However, their gym is thirty minutes away. They would like to expand their home to make space for an indoor gym with a variety of equipment. They loved the location of the house because of the view of the Long Island Sound. They would like to add an outdoor deck overlooking the sound so they can relax outside when having people over. They would also like to add a full master bedroom and bathroom with closets to accommodate for friends and family. With their three kids, each having their own bedroom there is nowhere for their family members from out of state to stay.  Finally, the family would like to add another living room/playroom that their three children can enjoy. They feel as if adding another living room will give their kids a space to hang out while they get a place to meet with their friends and talk.

The new addition connects to the existing buidling both circulatory and with the idea of open and closure. The front of the house is mostly closed with minimal windows, while the back of the house overlooking the sound is open with large windows and a deck. The entire front of the house is considered private until entering the public part of the house towards the back. There is a straigh circulation path running horizontally through the middle of the house.
